The attraction of a small door
We all know that curiosity killed the cat. In this case we have a small door. That isn’t very unusual in this house. The fact that there is a ginger cat in the same house with that small door is getting more interesting. The door belongs to a family of mice that life in that house behind that small door. It only got installed because the draft was unbearable. Especially in winter.
So papa mouse installed it not that long ago. That was a brilliant idea. Now the place is draft free and much warmer. They don’t have to spend so much in heating in winter. And it keeps the dust out. Mama mouse is particularly happy about that. She can’t stand the dust. Nor does she wants to sweep the floor every day. It’s bad enough that the 5 kids are making a mess.
Every morning after breakfast, papa mouse goes to work. He kisses every kid goodby. Mama mouse prepares lunch for him and gives him a big kiss. And so he leaves. It’s only a short walk across the living room floor and the kitchen. He works in the silo department. There he makes sure the grain is of good quality before it gets stored until it gets milled. It’s a serious job. And he takes it serious.
At the end of a long day he heads home. usually he walks past the sleeping ginger cat in the kitchen. He is well fed and never bothers him. Not today. He wasn’t at his usual spot. Papa mouse shrugged his shoulders and moved on. Meh, he probably fell asleep on the sofa again.
He wasn’t on the sofa either. But he was lying in front of the door, papa mouses door. A little bemused he watched the ginger cat for a while. But after a while he got bored watching a cat. Papa mouse asked him:
Hey Bob, what are you doing?
They know each other by their first name for a long time.
I’m checking out this door here. He replies.
It’s my door and I want to go home. I had a long day at the silo and I’m tired.
It can’t be. Bob says without loosing concentration. You never had a door. You don’t need a door. I look after you. There must be rats in this house. Rats a cunning and evil. I hate rats.
No Bob, this is my door. I installed it and I still life here. Watch this. Papa mouse squeezes past the ginger cat and knocks on the door. No one answers. See, you goofy old cat. There is no one but me here. And with that he enters his place and shuts the door. They have dinner and go to sleep.
The next morning papa mouse gets up, has breakfast and kisses every one goodby. He grabs his lunch and goes to the door. One last kiss from his wife and he goes to work.
Upon opening the door he spots Bob, the ginger cat, still in the same position as last night.
Bob!? He yells.
Earl, Bob responds, did you see any rats while you were in there?
Papa mouse just rolls his eyes and goes to work. At least someone is guarding his family.
The end
