Australia Day 2019
Australia Day is here again. It will open old wounds and create new ones.
I personally don’t want to enter the discussion. It’s a topic that ends up in tears. The more I read into it, the more I get confused. People try from all sides to pull you into their camp and make you their poster boy. I probably pointed it out a few times here. I’m a cartoonist and not a commentator. I like to start a discussion with one of my cartoons, but that’s about it.
So let’s go back to the cartoon. I draw the weekly cartoons in the local newspaper. I have a great range of freedom to draw what I see fit for the week. It’s not always easy to get it right. I get comments from time to time that the reader didn’t get the cartoon. That’s fine. But for all the others it’s either a giggle or it makes them think.
To me it’s important that people think. more often than not they jump to conclusion and make up their own story. These days with the instant gratification of the internet, it is much easier to criticise than to sit back and think about the whole picture. Read up on the backstory. Create a story of facts rather than deliver verbal diarrhoea upon the world.
Whoa, settle back Danny. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. Well, that is true. However, I find it increasingly disturbing to hear about attacks on individuals simply because they drew a picture. Lucky I have escaped such attack so far. I know other cartoonists who didn’t fare so well. I don’t even need to name names, if you live in Australia and show some interest in cartoons, a few names spring to minds.
To be honest, I prefer to keep things on the lighter side of life. I will let you all know once I get my first hate mail.
until then, lets all sit together and celebrate Australia Day, or not. Enjoy the day off. Crack open a tinny, ice cold, and chuck something onto the barbie. That’s what I’ve been told to do when I got here.
