Maroondah HWY roadworks

How long does it take to make the Maroondah HWY better? This is a question a lot of locals are asking. The road isn’t all that bad. An extra line added would have solved most of the problem. As you can tell, this isn’t happening. Not yet anyway.

My background is as a local travelling up and down that stretch of road for well over 15 years. I used motorbikes, cars and trucks. I did that in modern cars and one from the 1940’s. So I know the place quite well. There were plenty of fixes and accidents. However, the later was usually as a result of other factors than the road.

Early in 2020 the stretch of Maroondah highway was earmarked for an upgrade and enhanced safety. For that they started to install wire rope barriers. Most motorcyclists hate them. We tend to get sliced open if we happen to hit them.

But this isn’t the reason for the cartoon. I have an issue with the suspension of the works for the duration of winter. Apparently it is too cold and too wet to work. I used some colourful language when I found out. As if they didn’t work out at the start of the project that Melbourne winters are wet and cold.

This cartoon is featured in the local papers, the Star Mail News.

To this date, October 2020, the Maroondah HWY is still under construction, with an imposed speed limit between 40-80km/h. Fancy that, they make the road safer and drop the speed limit. What are they thinking? So many are furious about that. Can we do anything about it? Nope.

For the foreseeable future we are trundling up the highway much slower. These days, with Damocles speed sword hanging over the drivers head, everyone is making sure they don’t cope a fine. That results everyone travelling at 80km/h anyway. The only time one can travel at 100km/h is when no one is on the road.

Anyway. I’m out of this for now. I reckon this one will show its ugly face again. Until then we see you on a slow road whenever it’s done.
